The Johannesburg Art Gallery. That was the plan for Human Rights day. Danae and I picked Sam up at 9 and off we went. (We were the only members of the gang who did not have pressing study, holiday or photography duties...).
Having wound our way through the traffic and taxis (we even drove past the infamous Joubert Park), we arrived. At a closed, albeit beautiful, museum building. Never open on a Monday and certainly not on a public holiday.
Sam then suggested 44 Stanley as an option for us to get something to drink and I jumped at the opportunity - have been wanting to go there for ages.
We drove past the most beautiful murals on the way - pieces of art in their own right! And not closed on a Monday...
44 Stanley. Not all the shops were open, but we investigated all the nooks and crannies anyway. So imagine my surprise when we saw a coffee shop called Bean There (sadly also not open) and I had a 'for reals' déjà vu moment... When I did the Barista course with Sam's father-in-law in 2009, we were brought there for lunch and to experience the bean roasting process. It was raining that day (head down, dashing into the centre), and we didn't get time to browse so I never made the connection to 44 Stanley. Duh! :-)
We ended up at Vo Vo Tela where we had good coffee and baguettes. On the way back, stopped at the Nike factory shop in Woodmead. Danae wanted (and bought herself) some of the fancy-schmancy training shoes which the teens absolutely have-to-have at the moment.
All-in-all a very pleasant outing! Best of all, we still have the Art Gallery to look forward to. Hopefully soon. Just not on a Monday. :-)
