Ode to the Bean

distinctive shapes
in rich brown hues
offer the first whiff
of bliss to come

the harsh sound of grinding
juxtaposed by aroma
forcefully, exquisitely
released

 gentle coaxing of the
mound into the
moka pot belly,
onto the heat

 the distinctive tang
permeating the room
crawling up the nostrils,
bursting with promise


 until splutters
signal the end of the brew
flavours fully aroused,
ready

 the first sip
grabbing the tongue
with its strong overtones,
fragrantly bitter

then gentle caress
as the velvety liquid
mellows, each sip…
pure delight!

so, to the goatherd
 whose spotting of the
red cherry effects
yielded the decoction *
so widely enjoyed
