The Fairy Princess

Marni. 25 August 1994. First born.

You have always been wise beyond your years. Calm and amiable, but never afraid to have your own opinion and be different from the rest. You are not afraid to say it as it is and, as much as we tease you about the ‘broken’ filter, we all admire your forthrightness. You seem to strike the perfect balance between ‘fitting in’ while not giving up who you are. It seems that you have the innate ability to judge which battles are worth fighting and which ones to just let go. Your worldview has always been unique and we all still remember how you were able to explain how going to heaven works – at the tender age of four. You care deeply about the people close to you and will protect them fiercely. While you will share experiences and chatter away, there is a part that you keep carefully guarded – your innermost feelings only visible to the discerning who manage to see past the barrier. Your sense of humour and your ability to ‘dramatize’ events always has us in stitches. When you play the piano it is as much of a pleasure to listen than to watch your hands moving gracefully over the keys. Creativity has always been a part of your life and also extends to your sense of style. You know exactly how to put ordinary clothes together to make a fashion statement. Given the creative spirit, you are sometimes a bit scatter brained and we’re always thankful when you find your way home again ... and that some things are attached to you. The undeniable truth is that you are a very beautiful, talented, intelligent, and creative young lady and it is a great honour and pleasure to know and love you!

 You are all grown up now and we celebrate your 20th birthday today! But as I'm selecting photographs, I remember your matric dance two years ago. The amazing transformation from a teenager goofing around with her sister during the practice photo shoot, to a breathtakingly beautiful young woman 24 hours later. Just like that.
