Notes on a road trip - Day 4 (part 1/2)

 26 August 2022, Friday

After a leisurely morning, which included bacon and cheese rolls for breakfast, we pottered around for a bit and then headed to Nieuwoudtville. Having started out cool and overcast, it was a beautiful sunny day.

The sight on an empty plot in town... one of many.

First stop was at the 'Kinkel Winkel' which is the arts and craft section of  'Die Nedersetting Restaurant'. After a brief browse, we sat down for a spot of lunch. The two ladies who own the shop, Wessie and Hester, were very welcoming and the interior full of character.

While waiting for the food, I took it upon myself to support the local economy again at the arts and craft shop. The purchase included some toilet lights - adjustable to any throne, sensing movement to switch on a light in the colour of your choice, and battery operated of course (duh, I know USB lights are all the rage, but where would you find a connector in your bathroom).  When next I am having  a middle-of-the-night loo break, bathed in a rose coloured light, I will smugly think of you eye-rollers and scoffers. 😂

We'd ordered wine by the glass, and this should set an example for all restaurants...

Wine by the glass! 250 ml, Live-a-Little - Wildly Wicked White

The food was also divine and Wessel enjoyed his tripe with all the proper trimmings - including a warm wet cloth for any oopsies. ;-)

Mine was a baked potato dish - very flavourful and filling.

Lunch done, we set off to the two recommended farms, starting with the furthest one called Matjiesfontein. Reporting first at the Padstal, we paid the requisite R25 per person and started the clearly marked route. The variety of flowers was plentiful and each really beautiful in their own right. Neither words nor camera image can really illuminate the beauty, but it will give you an idea.

It resembles a very small tulip

Even different types of grass to be seen

Beautiful succulents

Very fluks and fiks young ladies from CT doing the tour by bicycle.

As you can see, a firm wind blowing

The second farm, Boereplaas, also required check in and R25 per person at their Padstal. We used the restrooms, which were unapologetically rustic, but very clean, and ordered two takeaway vegetable and meat soups for our evening meal (served with 'roosterkoek' and real butter). The main attraction on this farm is the 'Katsterte' and we got a few nice photographs. Upon our return to the Padstal, we added milk tart and lemon squares to the order ... as one does. 😃

It reminds me of the way serviettes were folded in the 80s...

From there, we headed back to the farm ... stay tuned for part 2. Soon at a blog near you.

  1. Voel soos Déjà Vu... Pragtig! Hoop julle het skuinskoek ook gekoop by die plekkie op dorp. 🤗 Benita
